Tools for making your own sourdough bread!

If you’re local to my area, you’ve probably had my sourdough bread! Below are some links to help get you started with your own. Feel free to contact me with any questions, or if you are interested in taking a class on how to make your own!

Over the course of making many, many, many loaves of sourdough bread I have found that one of the biggest keys to making a great loaf is accurate measurements. To much water and your dough will become runny and hard to handle. To little and it will be dry and hard to stretch. Here is a link to the scale that I use for all my weight measured cooking. With only a couple buttons, it is very simple to use, compact, and has lasted me years so far.

For mixing your ingredients just about any good bowl will do, but I prefer glass or metal when working with my sourdough bread. These bowls in particular nest well together for storage, and the lids are very convenient for day-to-day use. The lids are very colorful, and as you probably know, Pyrex quality is outstanding. You can order and view more detail here.

For the proofing step you really want something just the right size to hold your loaf. This is another great Pyrex product that works well for my bread making, as I often make two loaves at a time. These great little bowls work perfectly for my needs.

If you’re looking for something a little more unique that will give your bread a very distinct ribbed look after baking, check out these banneton bowls. They also come with a handful of useful bread-making accessories to get you started, including a bread slasher and scraper. These bowls are completely optional and not required if you have the bowls listed above, but they’re a fun little option to add to your baking set.

Another great banneton bowl starting kit similar to the above… you really can’t go wrong with either option, and there are various other styles to choose from on this page. As noted above, these bowls are completely optional and not required if you have any of the other bowls listed above, but they’re a fun little option to add to your baking set.

When it’s time to cook, there is nothing like cast iron! I’ve got cast iron pots for camping and cooking, and this dutch oven set is the perfect size for baking a loaf of sourdough bread. When not making your sourdough bread, the 3 quart pot and skillet can be used separately for all of your cooking needs.

When the cooking is all done, it’s time to enjoy, and we all know that everything is better with butter! Of course any butter dish will do, but this dish has held up fantastically after years of daily use (even in a house full of teenagers!). While we have the neutral white tub shown to the left, there are several color styles to choose from.
